Chara (Movable) Also known as Bhadra Karana (Hen)

Intense  |  Cautionary  |  Bhadra

Vishti — far better known by its popular name Bhadra — is the seventh and last of the movable Karanas, and the one most people have actually heard of, since "Bhadra Kaal" is routinely avoided when timing important events. It is represented by a hen, and is classically regarded as the most challenging of the eleven Karanas.

Characteristics of Vishti Karana Natives

Classical sources describe Vishti/Bhadra as an intense, forceful energy — well suited to bold, even confrontational action, but generally unfavourable for anything meant to begin gently or peacefully. People are often cautioned to time major auspicious events outside this Karana's span.

Forceful Energy

Vishti/Bhadra carries a sharp, intense quality traditionally considered useful for decisive, even combative action, but poorly suited to gentle or celebratory beginnings.

Widely Avoided for Auspicious Timing

This is the Karana most commonly checked for and avoided when selecting a Muhurta (auspicious timing) for weddings, housewarmings and other major events — hence the familiar term "Bhadra Kaal".

The Deity of Vishti Karana — Mrityu

Vishti Karana is associated with Mrityu, a personification of death and ending, closely linked in tradition to Yama. This association explains why the Karana is treated with such caution: it is considered to carry a sharp, final, even severing energy that is unsuitable for new or gentle beginnings.

What the Symbol Hen Represents

The hen represents Vishti — chosen, in classical symbolism, to convey restlessness and unpredictability rather than the steady or auspicious qualities seen in most other Karana symbols.

Vishti Karana in the Panchanga

Vishti is unusual among the movable Karanas in that it occupies a special, closely tracked position: every Panchanga explicitly marks its start and end time each day as "Bhadra Kaal", precisely because so many important life events are deliberately scheduled to avoid it. Despite this reputation, classical texts do note exceptions — certain narrow uses (such as sharply focused, combative or destructive goals) where Vishti's intense energy is considered appropriate rather than harmful.
