Rashis (Vedic Astrology Signs)
Vedic astrology, also known as Jyotish, is an ancient and complex discipline rooted in the spiritual traditions of India.
It is based on the Vedas, in particular the Vedanga Jyotisha, one of the six appendices of the Vedas devoted to astronomy. It is based on the idea that the position of celestial bodies at the moment of birth influences the personality, events and destinies of individuals.
Vedic astrology, provides a fascinating glimpse into our personalities through the twelve zodiac signs, or "Rashis". The 12 Rashis (เคฐเคพเคถเคฟ), or zodiac signs, form the foundational framework of Vedic astrology, dividing the 360ยฐ ecliptic into equal segments of 30ยฐ each. Each Rashi carries a distinct personality, ruled by a specific Graha (planet) that colours its expression and temperament. While Western astrology and Vedic astrology share the same 12 signs, Jyotisha uses the Sidereal zodiac (based on the actual positions of stars) rather than the Tropical zodiac, resulting in a shift of approximately 23ยฐ โ known as the Ayanamsha. This makes Vedic sign placements feel more astronomically grounded and is one of the key distinctions between the two systems.
Each Rashi is further characterised by three layers of classification. First, its Modality (or quality) โ Moveable (Chara), Fixed (Sthira), or Common (Dwiswabhava) โ describes how that sign initiates, sustains, or transitions energy. Second, its Tattwa (element) โ Fire, Earth, Air, or Water โ describes the fundamental nature of its expression, much like in Western astrology. Third, and uniquely Vedic, each Rashi is subdivided into Nakshatras and their Padas (quarters of 3ยฐ20' each), linking the solar zodiac to the lunar mansion system and adding extraordinary depth to chart interpretation. Together, these layers make the Rashi system far more than just a personality classifier โ it is a precise astronomical and metaphysical coordinate system for mapping consciousness itself.
