Vedic astrology calls it your Janma Rashi — literally your "birth sign" — and treats it as the most personal point in your chart, more central to daily predictions than your Sun sign. Moon sign vs. Sun sign — what's the actual difference?

Western astrology (the kind behind most horoscope columns) reads your Sun sign, measured against the tropical zodiac, which is anchored to the seasons — to the moment of the spring equinox. Vedic astrology reads your Moon sign, measured against the sidereal zodiac, which is anchored instead to the actual, fixed background stars.

Those two zodiacs started out aligned roughly two thousand years ago. Since then, a slow wobble in the Earth's axis called precession has pulled them apart by about 24 degrees — which is why a Western Gemini is very often a Vedic Taurus, and so on for most other signs. Neither system is "wrong" — they are measuring different things (the Sun vs. the Moon) from different reference points (tropical vs. sidereal). Why does Vedic astrology use the Moon instead of the Sun?

In the Vedic tradition, the Moon governs the mind (manas) — your emotional patterns, instincts and moment-to-moment reactions — which is why it's treated as more revealing of personality than the Sun. It's also the anchor for Vimshottari Dasha, the planetary-period timing system Vedic astrology uses to time events in your life, which is calculated directly from your Moon's exact position and Nakshatra at birth.

Do I need my exact birth time?

For your Moon sign specifically, not always — the Moon takes roughly two and a half days to cross a single sign, so your birth date alone is usually enough. It matters more if you were born close to a sign boundary, or if you want your Nakshatra (birth star) and its pada (quarter), which the Moon moves through much faster — about one nakshatra per day, and one pada in roughly six hours.
