How to Ask a Horary (Prashna) Question

What Makes Horary Astrology Different
Unlike a birth chart, a horary (Prashna) chart is cast for the exact moment a question forms sincerely in your mind -- not your birth. That's what makes it useful even if you don't know your birth time. But it also means how you ask genuinely affects the quality of the reading. Our Horary Astrology Calculator generates the chart instantly; this guide covers how to get the most reliable answer from it.

Three Rules That Matter Most
  1. Ask with genuine, present concern. The technique is built on the "birth of the question" -- the moment real concern crystallizes. A question asked out of idle curiosity, or tested "just to see if it works," tends to produce a less reliable chart.
  2. One specific question at a time. Bundle two questions ("Will I get the job, and should I also invest in property?") and the chart has no clean way to separate the two answers. Ask the one most pressing question, get your answer, then ask the next separately.
  3. Don't repeat the same question too soon. If you've already asked something sincerely, asking again shortly after -- hoping for a different answer -- undermines the "first sincere thought" premise the whole system depends on.

Do's and Don'ts
Do
  • Ask about something specific and near-term ("Will I get this job offer?")
  • Ask when the concern genuinely feels pressing
  • Keep the question to one clear yes/no or narrow outcome
  • Give the chart a fair, specific timeframe to play out before re-checking
Don't
  • Ask vague, open-ended questions ("What does my future hold?")
  • Test the system with a question you don't actually care about
  • Ask the same sincere question repeatedly in a short window
  • Combine multiple unrelated questions into one chart

Example Questions
Well-formed: "Will I recover my lost wallet?" · "Will I get this specific job offer soon?" · "Will my pending court case go in my favour?"

Better rephrased: "Is my life going well?" → narrow it to a specific concern, e.g. "Will my health improve in the next few weeks?"

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I ask the same horary question twice?
Classical Prashna Shastra advises against repeating the same sincere question in a short span of time -- the chart for a repeated question is considered less reliable. If circumstances genuinely change, waiting before re-asking is recommended.
Do I need to ask my question out loud or in a specific format?
No specific wording ritual is required. What matters is the moment the question crystallizes with genuine concern -- that moment's planetary positions become the horary chart.
Can horary astrology answer yes/no questions only?
Horary is strongest on specific, bounded questions, which often are yes/no or near-term timing questions. Broad, open-ended questions are better suited to a full birth chart reading.
