Saptami โ€“ Significance, Festivals & Rituals

What is Saptami?

Saptami is the 7th lunar day (tithi) in the Hindu calendar, occurring twice every month โ€” once in the Shukla Paksha and once in the Krishna Paksha. It is primarily associated with the Sun God (Surya) and is considered auspicious for Surya worship.

What is Ratha Saptami?

Ratha Saptami falls on Magha Shukla Saptami and marks the northward journey of the Sun (Uttarayan). It celebrates the Sun God riding his chariot pulled by seven horses, symbolising the seven colours of light. It is observed with a holy bath, Surya puja, and offering of Arghya to the Sun.

What is the significance of Saptami during Navratri?

The seventh day of Navratri is dedicated to Goddess Kalaratri, the seventh form of Goddess Durga. She is worshipped for protection against evil forces and negative energies. Special pujas and offerings are made on this day.

How is Saptami observed?

Devotees rise before sunrise, take a holy bath, and offer Arghya to the Sun. Surya mantras such as the Aditya Hridayam are recited. Fasting and visiting Sun temples are common practices observed on Saptami.
