Pradosh Dates 2023

Pradosh Vrat, also known as Pradosham, is a sacred observance dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. It falls on the 13th tithi (Trayodashi) of both the Shukla Paksha and Krishna Paksha each month, giving 24 Pradosh Vrats in a regular year.

The word 'Pradosh' refers to the twilight period โ€” the 1.5 hours around sunset โ€” which is considered the most auspicious time to worship Lord Shiva on this day. When Pradosh falls on a Monday it is called Soma Pradosh, and on a Saturday it is called Shani Pradosh, both of which are considered especially powerful.

Pradosh Vrat โ€“ Significance, Fasting Rules & Rituals

What is Pradosh Vrat?

Pradosh Vrat is a sacred observance dedicated to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati, falling on the 13th tithi (Trayodashi) of both Shukla and Krishna Paksha each month. The word 'Pradosh' refers to the twilight period around sunset, which is the most auspicious time for Shiva worship on this day.

What is the significance of Pradosh Vrat?

It is believed that Lord Shiva is in a blissful and approachable state during the Pradosh period. Observing Pradosh Vrat is believed to destroy sins, fulfil desires, and grant health, wealth, and liberation. It is especially beneficial for those seeking relief from financial difficulties or health problems.

How is Pradosh Vrat observed?

Devotees observe a fast during the day and perform Shiva puja during the Pradosh period โ€” the 1.5 hours around sunset. The puja includes offering bilva leaves, milk, water, and flowers to a Shivaling while chanting the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra and Shiva Panchakshara Stotra.

What are the different types of Pradosh Vrat?

Pradosh Vrat is named after the day of the week on which it falls: Soma Pradosh (Monday) is especially auspicious for family wellbeing, Bhauma Pradosh (Tuesday) for relief from debts, Shani Pradosh (Saturday) for relief from the effects of Saturn, and Ravi Pradosh (Sunday) for good health.

Which Pradosh Vrat is the most powerful?

Shani Pradosh โ€” when Pradosh falls on a Saturday โ€” is considered the most powerful, followed by Soma Pradosh on Mondays. Both are believed to grant extraordinary blessings when observed with full devotion.
