Chaturthi โ€“ Significance, Types & Rituals

What is Chaturthi?

Chaturthi is the 4th lunar day (tithi) in the Hindu calendar, occurring twice every month โ€” once in the Shukla Paksha and once in the Krishna Paksha. Both are dedicated to Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles.

What is the difference between Sankashti Chaturthi and Vinayaka Chaturthi?

Sankashti Chaturthi falls on the Krishna Paksha Chaturthi each month. Vinayaka Chaturthi falls on the Shukla Paksha Chaturthi. The annual Ganesh Chaturthi festival is the Vinayaka Chaturthi of the Bhadrapada month.

What rituals are performed on Chaturthi?

Devotees offer modaks, durva grass, red flowers, and coconut to Lord Ganesha. Mantras such as the Ganesh Atharvashirsha are recited. On Sankashti Chaturthi, the fast is broken only after sighting the moon in the evening.

Which Chaturthi is the most auspicious?

Ganesh Chaturthi (Bhadrapada Shukla Chaturthi) is the most celebrated, marking the birth of Lord Ganesha. Among Sankashti Chaturthis, Angaraki Chaturthi โ€” falling on a Tuesday โ€” is considered the most powerful.

Why is Lord Ganesha worshipped on Chaturthi?

According to Hindu tradition, the 4th tithi is the day of Lord Ganesha. As the remover of obstacles and the god of new beginnings, Ganesha is worshipped on Chaturthi to seek blessings before any important task or journey.
