Vijayadashami marks the culmination of Navratri and celebrates the triumph of good over evil - Lord Rama's victory over Ravana, and Durga's victory over Mahishasura. The date follows Aparahna Vyapini Dashami - whichever day's Aparahna Kaal (the 4th of 5 daytime divisions, the afternoon) the Dashami tithi actually covers, since the main Shami Puja and effigy-burning rituals are timed to that window.
