Krishna Janmashtami celebrates the midnight birth of Lord Krishna. The date follows Nishita Vyapini Ashtami - whichever day's Nishita Kaal (the middle 1/5 of the night, around midnight) the Ashtami tithi actually covers, not simply the day of sunrise. Since Nishita Kaal spans across midnight, the resolved civil date can occasionally differ from what a simple sunrise-based lookup would suggest.
