On the eve of Holi, a bonfire is lit after sunset to commemorate the burning of the demoness Holika and the protection of the devotee Prahlad, symbolising the triumph of good over evil. Because the bonfire ritual happens after sunset, the date is chosen for the evening Purnima tithi. Note: traditional Muhurat also requires avoiding the Bhadra period within that evening window - check a detailed Panchang for the exact Bhadra-free timing before the ceremony.

The day after Holika Dahan is when Holi is actually played with colours - known as Dhulivandan, Rangwali Holi, or simply Holi in most of India. Since it's a daytime celebration, the date follows the standard sunrise-tithi rule.
