Age-Based Shanti

What Is Vayo-Avastha Shanti?
Vayo-avastha shanti is a series of Vedic rites performed on completing milestone ages, starting at 50. Each shanti is a prayer for health, a comfortable long life and peace of mind, and takes its name from the deity or theme at its centre. The sages Shaunaka and others gave the series its name, and the tradition lists eleven shantis between 50 and 100 years, from Vaishnavi at 50 to Shatabdi Mahamrityunjaya at 100. The best known are the Ugraratha shanti at 60 (Shashtyabdapurti), the Aindri shanti at 75 and the Sahasrachandra Darshan shanti at 80.
Why Are These Shantis Performed?
The sages saw life in three stages: childhood, youth and old age. In the last stage the body is more open to injury and illness and the senses begin to weaken. These shantis are prescribed so that such troubles may be kept away and the remaining years pass in comfort. There is a human side too: with age, news of accidents or the passing of people of our own age can unsettle the mind. The shanti gives the person and the family a ritual way to let go of that fear and enter the next stage with faith.
Why Every Five Years?
In Vedanga Jyotisha a block of five years is called a yuga, and five years is long enough for life around us to change noticeably yet short enough to renew one's resolve before the next change. So the tradition asks for a fresh shanti at each five-year step from age 50. Some sages begin at 60 and repeat every ten years, and families often choose the milestone ages that matter most to them.
Shanti Means Peace of Mind
A verse quoted from the Padma Purana says that the contentment felt in the mind, whether one has little or much, is what the wise call shanti. This peace rests on shraddha, faith, which is not the same as blind belief. The purpose of these rites is to build that steadiness, so that the later years are faced without fear.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is a shanti needed at every five-year step?
Tradition recommends the full series from 50 to 100, but many families choose the milestone ages that matter most to them, such as 60, 75 and 80. Your family's custom and the Guruji's advice guide this.
Does the age mean completed years?
Yes. The shanti is performed on completing the stated number of years, so the 60th-year shanti is done at 60 completed years. The exact day is usually fixed with the Guruji using the birth nakshatra and tithi.
I live outside India. Can I still perform this shanti?
Yes. We, at AstroVachmi, can perform it online, so your location should not hold you back. You and your family join the ceremony by video call and the sankalp is taken in your name.
Is this a replacement for medical care?
No. It is a faith-based ritual for peace of mind and well-being, not a medical treatment. Please continue regular health check-ups and treatment.
