Bhagavad Gita Chapter 2, Verse 20: The Immortal Soul
न जायते म्रियते वा कदाचिन्नायं भूत्वा भविता वा न भूयः । अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो न हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे ॥ २० ॥
na jāyate mriyate vā kadāchin nāyaṁ bhūtvā bhavitā vā na bhūyaḥ ajo nityaḥ śhāśhvato 'yaṁ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śharīre
Meaning in English
The soul is never born nor dies at any time. It has not come into being and will not come into being again. It is unborn, eternal, ever-existing, and primeval. It is not slain when the body is slain.
Astrological Significance
The 8th house governs death, fear, sudden transformation, and occult. When the 8th house is heavily activated — by transit, dasha, or natal placement — fear of endings dominates the native's psyche. This verse is the direct antidote: the soul is beyond the reach of any planetary period.
Which Transit or Yoga Is This For?
8th house transits, Saturn or Rahu in 8th, Mrityu Yoga, fear of death, near-death experiences, intense 8th lord periods
How to Use This Shloka as a Remedy
Recite this verse at sunset, when the day 'dies.' It reframes endings as transitions. Especially powerful during Ashtami tithis and during the 8th house dasha periods.
Commentary
Four consecutive negatives — na jāyate (not born), na mriyate (not dying), na bhūtvā bhavitā (not becoming), na hanyate (not slain) — hammer the point with poetic force. The soul is defined entirely by what it is not subject to. This is the Gita's ultimate answer to the 8th house.
